SAN JOSE — Nokia wants Samsung to pay. Apple wants more favorable ground rules the next time the tech giants face off in court. And as those companies howled for sanctions, John Quinn protested that his firm and client Samsung have already been punished enough.

The latest hearing over a breached protective order in Apple v. Samsung featured plenty of fireworks and still no resolution as to what remedy the court may impose on Samsung Electronics Co. and its lawyers at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan for mishandling sensitive information related to a licensing deal between Apple Inc. and Nokia.
