The specter of international law can be quite daunting due to the wildly diverse sets of laws governing countries in other areas of the world. In recent times, with globalization, more interaction has developed among citizens of wide-ranging cultures and beliefs. This has led to a higher volume of “transnational” marriages, which are unions between persons who come from different countries.
Since divorce is a phenomenon not limited to the United States, one would then expect an increasing rate of divorces which require international attorney expertise. Currently, there are almost no rules governing international divorce, even between traditionally close countries. So while there can be innumerable opportunities for all attorneys in this field, the risks are great and one must tread carefully across the “mine fields” that interconnect countries involved on opposing sides of an international divorce.
