It will be nine years ago this Valentine’s Day that the city of San Francisco began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. That decision by Mayor Gavin Newsom and city attorney Dennis Herrera set in motion a series of legal and political battles, including four rulings from the California Supreme Court and two from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The battle is expected to culminate this summer when the U.S. Supreme Court weighs the constitutional right of gay and lesbian couples to enter marital unions.
