I have two children: a son, 23, and a daughter who is 18. I am also a lawyer. When my daughter was 13 years old, she told me that she was gay. I had only one main concern — the hostility she would face in the world. These days, my daughter is a model citizen of whom any parent should be proud, having just finished high school and started college. She has decent grades and strong community service values. My family is supportive of her sexual orientation.

As a mother, Proposition 8, which seeks to amend the California Constitution to ban gay marriage, breaks my heart. As a lawyer, it seems unjust and formed of conflicting logic.
