Heller Ehrman, a 118-year-old fixture of the San Francisco law scene, announced its dissolution after a series of merger discussions failed to rescue it from a drop in business and steady partner losses. Management hopes for an “orderly dissolution” that won’t replay the chaos and recriminations that accompanied the 2003 flameout of Brobeck, Pfleger & Harrison, but on Friday, Oct. 10, staffers were surprised with mass layoff notices.
