SACRAMENTO Tort reformers have recruited a conservative Democrat to carry legislation that would rewrite California class action law to aid potential defendants.

AB 1505, by Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, D-Hanford, would allow defendants as well as plaintiffs to appeal a court’s class certification decision. Defendants, with the court’s permission, would also be allowed to contact each class member to offer a pre-trial settlement. And class proponents would be required to pick up the tab for notifying class members.
