Negotiations over the state unfair competition law have collapsed, and business interests and trial lawyers are now ramping up for an expensive ballot fight. For the past few weeks, trial lawyers had been negotiating with California car dealers -- one of the main business groups complaining that plaintiffs abuse the power of the unfair competition law. But those talks did not produce a package both sides liked and the groups involved are no longer meeting, leaving the issue to be battled at the ballot.
