Reuters U.S. general counsel Nancy Gardner has been named as the head of legal of Thomson-Reuters' financial news service arm.
Gardner joined Reuters America in 1995 from Weil Gotshal & Manges and was deputy general counsel before becoming legal chief of the newswire's U.S. business in 2001.
It is understood that when the two companies merge, Gardner will report to current Thomson general counsel Deirdre Stanley, who was appointed to the top post-merger legal job earlier this year.
Thomson's financial news service arm, Thomson Financial, is to be effectively merged into Reuters when the tie-up completes next year to create what will be the world's largest news and financial data company.
Gardner's appointment was made by Devin Wenig, Reuters' chief operating officer. It is not yet known what role Reuters' longstanding general counsel, Rosemary Martin, will have at the new company.
