The Minority Experience Survey is drawn from data gathered by ALM Media's Midlevel Associates and Summer Associates Surveys. This year 7,172 midlevel associates at 189 firms filled out the Midlevel Associates Survey, and 7,392 interns at 195 firms took part in the Summer Associates Survey.

Respondents had the option of listing their gender and ethnicity. A total of 6,356 midlevel associates (3,582 men and 2,774 women; 993 minority lawyers and 5,363 white lawyers) and 6,969 summer associates (3,774 men and 3,195 women; 1,896 minority students and 5,073 white students) did so.

We chose a range of questions from both surveys that dealt with quality of life issues, including work, client contact, responsibility, diversity, partner relations and family-friendliness. We then calculated the average response for each question for female minority respondents, female white respondents, male minority respondents and male white respondents.
