Sidley Austin has agreed to pay a $27.5 million settlement to end a closely watched age discrimination suit brought by the EEOC on behalf of 32 former partners who were demoted to counsel status in 1999 by the firm then known as Sidley & Austin. The case had drawn much attention to the issue of age at law firms, many of which maintain mandatory retirement policies for partners. It also showed how the corporate-like management structures typical of today's large firms have altered the nature of partnership.
