Refco Group's collapse has also meant trouble for its outside counsel, Joseph Collins. A federal indictment and an SEC complaint allege that Collins, as Refco's principal outside lawyer, assisted Refco's officers in devising and documenting transactions whose purpose was to conceal Refco's precarious financial health. Collins' plight is a cautionary tale of the myriad criminal, civil and regulatory hazards with which lawyers must contend when representing corporate clients, warns attorney James M. Keneally.
