The National Law Journal's Jenna Greene
The American Society of Business Publication Editors honored several ALM publications with Awards of Excellence at the annual "Azbees" on July 18. The highly competitive awards recognize outstanding work by business-to-business, trade, association and professional publications in print and online. ALM, which publishes The American Lawyer, The National Law Journal, Corporate Counsel and several other national and regional titles, won three national gold awards and the prestigious Stephen Barr Award, a national "best in class" prize for feature writing. The American Lawyer also received honorable mention as a finalist in the Magazine of the Year category. In addition, ALM publications were awarded three other bronze and silver national awards, and three gold and one silver award for publications based in the Northeastern United States. What follows is a collection of the articles that were honored by the ASBPE this year.
The National Law Journal
Jenna Greene, a National Law Journal senior reporter, was honored with the Stephen Barr Award, a special award that goes to the individual writer whose feature article most reflects inventiveness of approach, insightfulness, balance in presentation, depth of investigation and impact on the community of readers. Greene's article dealt with the seemingly endless legal wrangling over radiation leaks from a nuclear facility at Hanford, Wash. The story was also awarded a national gold award for best feature article.
Corporate Counsel
Corporate Counsel and senior reporter Sue Reisinger received a gold national award for best news analysis/investigative article for her examination of the U.S. Department of Justice's failed attempt to prosecute a GlaxoSmithKline lawyer for lying to investigators.
The American Lawyer
Michael Goldhaber, senior international correspondent for ALM, was honored with a national gold award for best individual profile for his look at a litigator who slipped into a legal gray zone while battling Chevron in Ecuador.
Law Technology News
Alan Cohen, a contributor to Law Technology News, received a silver national award for best technical article for a story on how law firms are adapting to demands for consumer technology.
The American Lawyer
The ASPBE awarded The American Lawyer and senior reporter Drew Combs a bronze national award for best organizational profile for his examination of strategic changes at O'Melveny & Myers.
Law Technology News
A team from Law Technology News also won a bronze national award for best technical article on the technology security challenges facing law firms.
The American Lawyer
A team from The American Lawyer, including Michael Goldhaber, Rosemarie Clancy, Craig Savitsky and Emily Barker, received a gold Northeast Region award for best original research. The scorecard is a biennial survey of the world's largest arbitrations.
Law Technology News
Craig Ball from Law Technology News won the gold Northeast Region award for best regular contributed column ("Ball in Your Court") for his efforts in cooperating with e-discovery requests and resolving forum disputes.
