Squire Sanders & Dempsey has elected a new chairman for the first time in 20 years.

James Maiwurm, who has been the top 60 U.S. firm's global managing partner since 2003, is to take on the chairman role from Thomas Stanton.

Stanton, who has been the firm's chair since 1990, was ineligible for re-election due to a clause in the firm's partnership agreement.

Maiwurm started his legal career at Squire Sanders in 1974 and has spent the majority of his career with the firm. He also established Squire Sanders' Northern Virginia office in 2001.

Commenting on his successor, Stanton said: "In addition to his decades of legal experience, Jim's business experience gives him a deep and direct understanding of client needs. He knows first-hand how lawyers help clients achieve their goals."

Maiwurm said: "Tom is the one who first saw what Squire Sanders could be and would need to be for the firm to grow and prosper in the 21st century and meet the expanding worldwide needs of many of our clients. His vision and his hard work over the past two decades have shaped our firm into the global leader it is today."

During Stanton's leadership, Squire Sanders has grown from eight to 32 offices, expanding outside of the US into markets including Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The firm has recently been looking to widen its UK and European capabilities and it emerged earlier this year that it had held merger discussions with Denton Wilde Sapte.
