O'Melveny & Myers expanded its New York intellectual property practice Monday by adding a former White & Case partner. The hire of Marc Ackerman was part of a strategic push by O'Melveny to build out its national IP practice in certain areas, particularly New York and Washington, D.C., the firm said.

That push ran into hurdles earlier this year after a three-partner group in New York led by IP litigator Dale Cendali defected for Kirkland & Ellis in March.

"Building the IP practice nationwide was a strategic priority before some of our former partners decided to leave the firm," said Darin Snyder, the San Francisco-based chair of the practice. "This is not a reaction to their departure, although it does allow us to better fulfill some of our clients needs directly from a New York outpost."

Ackerman, the former chair of the sports law committee for the New York City Bar, has a history of representing the National Football League, the National Hockey League and ESPN in copyright and trademark disputes. He also represented White & Case institutional client Visa Inc. in litigation and arbitration involving World Cup sponsorship deals.
