Saul Ewing has continued to trim its ranks because of the downturn in the economy.

The firm said Monday that it cut seven attorneys and seven staff members purely for economic reasons.

This is the second round of cuts the firm has made since early January when it let go of 12 staff members. The initial staff cut comprised about 4 percent of the firm’s overall staff headcount and was done across four offices for economic reasons. The cuts included the firm’s full-time pro bono counsel and diversity program manager.

The seven associates laid off Monday were across a variety of practice areas, according to firm spokeswoman Leslie Gross. She said every department was affected. Six of the seven were in the Philadelphia office, and one was in the Washington, D.C., office.

The affected staff members were spread across the firm, she said.

Layoffs have hit a number of the Am Law 200 firms in Pennsylvania in the past few months. Blank Rome, Morgan Lewis & Bockius and K&L Gates were the most recent firms to face both attorney and staff cuts.

Blank Rome let go of 27 associates and 52 staff members earlier this month. That was in addition to the 20 associates and 40 staff members it cut in January. A few days before Blank Rome made its second round of cuts, K&L Gates said it was letting go of 36 associates and 79 staff members. On that same day, Morgan Lewis confirmed it was cutting 55 attorneys and 161 staff members across its U.S. offices. The firm also delayed start dates for its incoming fall associates from October 2009 to October 2010. Those associates were offered a $5,000-a-month stipend if they were able to land a job in the public interest sector during that year.
