Four New York judges, backed by their judicial associations, filed suit Wednesday to compel an immediate 26 percent pay raise, plus smaller increases, retroactive to 2000. At a press conference announcing the filing of the declaratory judgment action, a plaintiffs lawyer said many judges feel the point has been reached where there was "no other alternative" but to sue. The judges contend the desired increase reflects the rise in the cost of living since they last received an increase about nine years ago.
