Move to End Forced Judicial Retirement Gains Momentum in N.Y.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said he wants to review the state Constitution's 150-year-old mandate that most judges retire at the end of the year in which they turn 70. Just after attending a swearing-in ceremony Monday for Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye to a term that will end when she is forced to step down on Dec. 31, 2008, Spitzer said in an interview that leaders in private industries and professions "are wondering whether rules of that sort make any sense."
