In late 2005 and early 2006, increases in associate salaries hit the nation by storm, starting in Los Angeles and quickly spreading. Recent raises have been more like a trickle. But now, word has leaked that Irell & Manella, the Los Angeles firm that started the first raises in 2005, has matched the New York scale of $145,000, at least for its first-year associates. And Chicago-based Kirkland & Ellis confirms that it's upped its California offices to start at $145,000. When will other firms cave?
