Women who juggle kids and careers might expect some sympathy from female clients. After all, the thinking goes, they can relate -- or not. Some in-house counsel at a recent National Association of Women Lawyers event took the harder line, reminding the crowd: Clients come first. Said one GC, "If there's a family crisis or something with the kids or other clients, we don't care about it -- get the job done. You are a commodity to us -- show me how you can solve a problem."
