Philip Hirschkop is preparing to close his law offices in Old Town Alexandria, Va., after a colorful, four-decade career that has made him an icon among left-wing lawyers. Perhaps his most significant case was Loving v. Virginia, a landmark 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned Jim Crow-era laws banning interracial marriage. Over the years, Hirschkop has represented a diverse clientele, including anti-war activists jailed for protesting, the American Nazi Party and Texas oil magnates.
