9th Circuit Maps Path for Cases Involving Sentencing Issues

The 9th Circuit decided Wednesday that the U.S. Supreme Court's recent rulings on federal sentencing guidelines apply to most, if not all, cases currently on appeal. The court held that sentencing someone under the guidelines constituted "plain error" -- which should make it easier for defendants to win appeals. The opinion in U.S. v. Ameline marks the first time the circuit, the largest in the country, has addressed last month's landmark high court rulings.
