Japanese firm TMI Associates has announced it will launch an office in Silicon Valley.
TMI’s Palo Alto office will be the first for a Japanese firm in the U.S. technology hub. TMI says it plans to focus on intellectual property matters for Japanese clients that do business there.
A firm spokesperson says the firm will relocate lawyers from Japan to staff the new office but has yet to finalize whom and how many it will send.
Japanese law firms have been on an overseas expansion kick in recent years. TMI joined other major Tokyo firms in opening a Singapore office in 2012 and it was also one of several that recently launched offices in Myanmar. The firm also has offices in China and Vietnam.
TMI has 316 lawyers, making it Japan’s fifth-largest law firm after Tokyo’s Big Four of Nishimura & Asahi, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, Anderson Mori & Tomotsune and Mori Hamada & Matsumoto.
