Richard Sharpstein, the prominent Miami criminal defense attorney who died in December, will be honored by the Miami chapter of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers at its annual banquet April 26.
Sharpstein, formerly of Akerman, will be presented the Daniel S. Pearson-Harry W. Prebish Founders Award posthumously. He served two terms as the chapter president.
Other awards will be given to Miami-Dade Circuit Judge William Thomas, Regional Counsel attorneys Phil Reizenstein and Kellie Peterson and Miami-Dade Assistant Public Defender Sara Yousuf.
Thomas will receive the Gerald Kogan Judicial Distinction Award “in recognition of an extraordinary career contribution and for dedicated service to the improvement of the criminal justice system.”
Reizenstein and Peterson will receive the Rodney Thaxton “Against All Odds” Award for their defense of Dennis Escobar during his two-month homicide trial in the slaying of a police officer, which ended with a mistrial in 2013.
Yousuf will receive the Gregg Wenzel Young Lawyer’s Award, which is presented to “a young lawyer whose hard work in the legal arena and in service to the community exemplifies what young and fearless attorneys should strive for.”
The FACDL banquet will be held at the InterContinental Miami Hotel. The group has 800 members.
