The Obama administration may be drawing to a close on Jan. 20, but that doesn’t mean that Obama-era labor and employment laws and regulations aren’t still taking effect. Here are some regulatory changes that came into play at the start of 2017, and what counsel representing employers have to say about them:

Federal Contractors: Effective Jan. 1, employees of federal contractors who are working on or in connection with federal contracts are entitled to up to 56 hours of paid sick leave per year to take care of their health or the health of family members. The rules were originally mandated in an executive order from President Barack Obama in September 2015. Federal contractor employees also became eligible for a boost in the minimum wage.
