General Motors Co. executive Robert Ferguson on Thursday returned to his old job as the chief lobbyist for the embattled automaker as it tries to ease anger in Washington, D.C., over its ignition-switch defect and ongoing recall crisis.

Ferguson, who most recently led Cadillac’s operations for GM, served as GM’s top lobbyist from 2010 to 2012. This year, according to GM, he already has helped the automaker respond to federal lawmakers and regulators over the recalls of millions of vehicles with faulty switches that the company has tied to 13 deaths.
