Federal contractors and subcontractors must increase efforts to recruit, hire and retain people with disabilities. As Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton associate Shira Forman explains on the Labor & Employment Law Blog, the new rule from the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs took effect March 24, establishing the first nationwide 7 percent goal for the employment of qualified individuals with disabilities.

Thus, federal contractors must determine whether these employees make up 7 percent of each job group designated in their Executive Order 11246 affirmative-action programs. Those with 100 or fewer employees have the option of applying the goal to their workforce as a whole.
