| Midlevel Survey Shows Associates Eyeing the Door |

As recently as the mid-'90s, incoming associates, be they new law school recruits or potential lateral hires, all tended to ask the same question: How long does it take to make partner here? But today, nobody seems to ask that. The shift isn't due to a reluctance by firms to promote or associates' insecurity over the economy. Instead, American Lawyer's annual midlevel survey indicates that, although most associates think they could make partner, they're just not sure they want to.
