Chicago-based labor and employment firm Seyfarth Shaw has recruited eight partners for an Australian launch.

Five of the new partners—Darren Perry, Chris Gardner, Justine Turnbull, Ben Dudley, and Luke Edwards—are joining Seyfarth from Herbert Smith Freehills. Two others, Rachel Bernasconi and Michael Tamvakologos, hail from Ashurst, while Henry Skene was previously a partner with Arnold Bloch Leibler.

Dudley and Tamvakologos will open a Melbourne office for Seyfarth, while the rest of the partners will launch the firm’s Sydney office.

In a letter announcing the move, Seyfarth chairman J. Stephen Poor said the firm was continuing a drive to expand its cross-border employment practice.

"[T]his accomplished team provides us an exceptional presence in the employment and industrial relations space in Australia," he said.

Except for Edwards, who was a senior associate, the four joining from Herbert Smith Freehills were all partners at their former firm and most have more than 15 years at the firm advising on both contentious and non-contentious labor and employment matters.

Seyfarth Shaw, which has around 900 lawyers, has nine U.S. offices. It launched its first oversesas office in London in 2011 and opened in Shanghai earlier this year.
