It was a hot bench on Tuesday as the Georgia Supreme Court mulled the legality and consequences of allowing prosecutors to withdraw a plea deal if a judge issues a lighter sentence than what the state and the defendant negotiated.

Tuesday’s case stemmed from a felony murder prosecution in which a Fulton County judge gave a defendant a 10-year sentence, rather than the 20-year recommendation by prosecutors under a plea deal. When the state objected, the judge re-sentenced the defendant to 20 years.
