Anglo-German law firm Taylor Wessing has formed an exclusive alliance with 120-lawyer Korean firm DR & AJU International Law Group.
Sonny Sung-hoon Im, a partner at DR & AJU, says the Korean firm’s clients will benefit from Taylor Wessing’s extensive network in Europe, as well as its Singapore joint law venture, RHTLaw Taylor Wessing. Southeast Asia has been a major focus of Korean overseas investment.
DR & AJU was created in 2009 through a merger between DaeRyook International Law Firm and Aju International Law Group.
In February, Bird & Bird also entered into an alliance with a Korean firm, Hwang Mok Park. Both firms say such deals make more sense for them than opening a Seoul office, as they get access to the Korean market without making a significant commitment on the ground.
Over 20 international law firms have opened in Seoul since the market opened in 2012; in 2017 they will be permitted to form joint ventures with local firms.
Taylor Wessing has about 1,000 lawyers in 23 offices in Europe and Asia.
