The Texas Panhandle experienced its worst wildfire on record during March 2024, according to CoreLogic, highlighting how wildfire season has become a year-round happening.
CoreLogic reported that Texas' Smokehouse Creek fire destroyed more than 1 million acres burned and roughly 1,544 single-family residential properties with a combined reconstruction value of $356 million were located within the wildfire perimeter.
Although it was the most devastating fire in Texas history, the Smokehouse Creek fire does not rank among the country's most destructive. The slideshow above reviews the most destructive wildfires in U.S. history, according to The Zebra, which based the rankings on loss costs, acres burned and deaths.
